Falconet, Étienne-Maurice

Falconet, Étienne-Maurice
(1716-1791)
   sculptor
Born in Paris, Etienne Falconet studied under noted sculptors and was accepted into the Academy of Fine Arts in 1754 with a baroque work, Milon de Cro-tone devoré par un lion (Milo of Crotona devoured by a lion). He was a favorite of Mme de pompadour for whom he produced a number of works (La Musique (Music), 1751; L'Hiver (Winter), 1765), and who placed him in charge of the Sèvres porcelain factory (1757-66). He provided numerous models—lovers, nudes, dancers, children—for manufacture in porcelain in a dainty and intimate style. Falconet triumphed with a Pygmalion et Galatée (1763), done in the same mode and which denis diderot considered to be a masterpiece. Falconet's Monument à Pierre le Grand (1766-78, st. Petersburg, Russia) commissioned by Catherine the Great, is a colossal equestrian statue of Czar Peter the Great and is considered his major later work, prefiguring romanticism in its style. In 1761, Falconet published his Réflexions sur la sculpture.
